 Autumn/Winter Self-care Technique's

Hi guys, so you may have noticed I haven't posted for a little while, sometimes life just gets in the way and we need to take a break. I must admit there are a few reasons why I haven't posted, but I am grateful for everyone who has mentioned they miss me posting so I will try and keep it up for the future! It's been a very busy few months for me and sometimes things can get a little stressful or busy and we need to remember to take some time for ourselves because our self-care and well-being is important, I for one can really resinate with this, because for so long I have been neglecting my self-care. It's easy to forget about the techniques that you can use so this is why now the season has changed and we move into Autumn and Winter we should go over these technique's to help improve our mood and overall well-being.

1. Take a nature walk

The weather may have gotten colder but going for a walk is just the same, it does you good, the fresh air soothes you and takes away any worries you have. It's a calming technique and it's so simple, combine it with walking meditation and you've completely transformed your state. A simple walk will do anyone the world of good, even if that be 5 or 10 minutes or even an hour, the fresh crisp air, or that be a rainy day nothing is better than getting in some steps and feeling productive. There's is literally nothing that can beat a great walk, no one can say they don't feel better after moving, (well unless they've walked like 20 miles haha).

2. Take a cosy nap

You might be suprised for me to mention such a thing on a self-care list but the truth is we all sometimes need a break, a little pick me up, a little 5 minutes to yourself and sometimes  this can mean the simplist of things like a nap. Powernaps for 10-30 minutes can make you feel so much better and reguvinated for the rest of day. It gives you that spare energy you didn't have so that you can continue your day and as the days are getting shorter I think it's what we can all beneift from time to time.

3. Write in your journal

This is something I am all for, but it can be difficult to do, remember and can sometimes get forgotten about. Keeping a journal, once in the habit of it can do wonders for your mindset. Keeping your thoughts and feelings written down and ways to improve is proven to get better results, to feel happier and to have a greater outlook on life. You can literally write about anything that comes to mind, there are no rules. You could write about the day ahead, your todo's, how your day has gone, your goals and ambitions, how you are feeling, how you want to feel, affirmations and grateful points. These small tiny little things can make the world of difference to your life, if you only start writing them down.

4. Drink hot chocolate or your favourite warm drink

Having a warm drink on a gloomy day, cuddled up in your duvet on the sofa sound familar? Although it may not feel like it, this is a form of self-care, you're giving yourself a break, you're allowing yourself to do you, to breath and feel cosy. Now I'm not usually a hot drink kinda girl but a hot chocolate, with cream and marshmellows is soooo good, for me if I pop to Costa it 1000% tastes better in a takeaway cup ;-) Honestly though a warm drink makes everything better when it gets colder and darker this time of year.

5. Light a candle

I love candles anyway for their fragrance and warmth but this time of year more so. Candles are so relaxing and are really good for getting you in a good head space to write in a journal or to sit in silence with your thoughts. The fragrance brightens up your home, your environment, and when your room smells nicer it instantly makes you feel lighter and happier.

6. Enjoy warm socks and Pj's

This time of year when it gets chilly it can be easy to resist to put the heating on, one it's expensive haha, and two we should always put on layers before using the heating! When we are warm we are much happier people so this brings me on to the next topic, socks and PJ's! Who doesn't love thier PJ's, this time of year we practically live in them! I'm more of a get up and go person so this isn't something I'd do all the time, but being in your PJ's is again something that you can feel as a bit of treat, to spend the whole day in and have a movie day. Also socks, it could be normal or fluffy socks but nothing is better when they are warm from either the tumble dryer or from the radiator warm snuggly socks are the best, they warm you up and keep you nice and toasty! oh it's the little things!!

7. Bake

It's also the time where we 'all' do the most baking! Whether that's getting ready for Halloween or Christmas to come, the British love to bake! Whether that's Halloween scary biscuits and cupcakes or Gingerbread men or even a warm tasty pie. With the oven on your home it is instantly warmer and the freshly baked goodies always makes you feel good, it's practially like the smell of freshly cooked bread and the sound when you pull it apart when it's crispy (sooooo good).  Whether you do the baking or someone else in your family does, it makes you feel good, well especially if someone else has made it aha!

8. Start a new hobby

As we spend more time inside in the next few months, it's a great idea to pick up a hobby like knitting or scrapbooking or even as per above baking! You could knit yourself a warm jumper, or keep a scrapbook of your memories to come in the next few months. When you pick up another hobby, it keeps you entertained and working towards something, and most importantly keeps you off the damage that social media does to us when we are constantly glued to our screens. Picking up another hobby lifts us up, and puts are minds at ease when we have other things to focus on.

9. Decorate for the season

So this blog post is up later than I wanted but it's still in time! Decorating for the season gives you purpose and fulfilmment, especially if you love the holidays! I don't particulary enjoy Halloween, I've never really celebrated it, so I appologise now for any readers who are jumping for joy for the spooktacular month! But if it is what gives you joy then celebrate, and decorate to your hearts content. Christmas on the other hand, I do and I don't enjoy, I by far most don't enjoy the short days, the dark / early nights and the cold. I literally thrive in Spring and Summer! but I do love the christmas paper, the cards; I honestly value christmas and birthday cards so much, like someone has taken the effort to write you a card it just means so much and I am so grateful, but also the markets and shopping I just love the atmosphere it brings. Decorating for the season gives so many people joy and excitement and it is something that we do to make us feel good and get ready for the holidays.

Mindset and Self-care and wellbeing I believe matters so much more this time of year, if you're someone like me who suffers from SAD this time of year then it's extremly important to get some sort of self-care in, it can be many of the things I've mentioned above or others but just scheduling in this time whether it's 30mins - 1 hour a week or a whole day like Sunday for example. Just having that time to yourself really does you the world of good and can pick you up when you feel really low. I've been there and I'm sure many of you have too, but the main thing to think about is bouncing back and making that time for you. No one can ever say 'they don't have time' we all have the same 24 hours in a day, it's how you make the most of that time that counts.

And with that, I will leave you to get on with your day, but remember 10 minutes or a whole day make time for you.
